''' Owning The Full Stack: Why Marketing Agencies Must Become Product Companies
Most marketing agencies are already dead. They just haven’t admitted it yet.
That isn’t the opening line you’d expect from someone who sold their last agency for a reported £10M. That exit is often framed as a success story, the culmination of a decade of grinding. The reality is more complex. It was an escape. An escape from a fundamentally broken model, one based on renting out clever people's time by the hour or the month. A model that is utterly, fatally indefensible against what is coming.
I built a successful, eight-figure agency by playing the old game better than most. We had the awards, the big-name clients, the glass-fronted office. But deep down, I knew we were running on a treadmill. Growth meant hiring more people. More people meant more overheads, more management headaches, and diminishing returns. Your headcount becomes a liability, not an asset. The model is a pyramid scheme with worse margins.
