My biggest mistake wasn't a catastrophic hire, a bungled seven-figure client campaign, or a poorly timed investment. It was spending years believing the SaaS dream.
The pitch is seductive. A slick user interface, a low monthly fee, and the promise of efficiency. But the promise is a lie. Software as a Service doesn’t serve you. It gives you a shovel and a map of a minefield, then charges you a monthly subscription for the privilege of digging yourself out.
SaaS doesn't reduce workload. It re-packages it. It creates new tasks, new dashboards to check, new workflows to manage, new specialists to hire. Your team isn't doing more marketing; they're spending more time managing the software that's supposed to help them do marketing.
This isn't a sustainable model. It's a dead end. The entire paradigm of logging into a platform to manually perform tasks is about to be rendered obsolete. The era of 'Software as a Service' is over. The future is AI as an Agent.
Let’s be clear about what we mean by 'agentic AI'. This isn't just a chatbot with a fancier name. An agent is an AI system that can independently understand a goal, create a plan to achieve it, and then execute that plan using the tools available. It doesn't need you to hold its hand. It doesn't present you with a dashboard of data and expect you to figure out what to do next. It takes action.
Think about the difference between a tool and a teammate. Your hammer doesn't build the shelf for you. Your spreadsheet doesn't write the financial report. These are passive tools that require your direct, constant intervention. A teammate, on the other hand, understands the objective and gets on with it.
Consider the gulf between Mailchimp and an agentic email system like our own, Autoemails. Mailchimp is a classic SaaS tool. It gives you a drag-and-drop editor, list management, and some basic analytics. But you, or someone on your team, still has to write the copy, design the template, segment the list, schedule the send, and then try to interpret the results. The 'service' is the software; the work is still all yours.
An email agent, by contrast, is given a goal:
