Founders, particularly those with an engineering background, are obsessed with technical perfection. They chase elegant algorithms, scalable architecture, and flawless UI. They spend months, sometimes years, polishing a product in isolation, believing that technical superiority is a defensible moat. It’s not. It’s a beautifully crafted coffin.
The brutal truth is that market timing eats technical complexity for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A ‘good enough’ product that hits the market at the crest of a wave will always beat a ‘perfect’ product that launches into the trough.
In the new age of agentic AI, this isn’t just a principle. It’s a law of physics, and it’s about to make entire categories of SaaS and service businesses extinct.
The Seductive Trap of Technical Perfection
Why do we fall for it? Why do we insist on polishing the engine when the ship is still in a dry dock miles from the sea? It’s a combination of ego, fear, and a fundamental misunderstanding of value.
Ego tells us our work is a reflection of our intelligence. We want to build something impressive, something other engineers will admire. We chase peer validation instead of market validation. Fear tells us that if we launch something with flaws, the world will reject it and, by extension, us. We use the quest for perfection as a shield against potential criticism.
I learned this lesson the hard way. In the early days of building out our internal toolset, we became obsessed with a particular analytics feature. The idea was to create a predictive model for campaign performance. The team spent three months and, when you factor in salaries and opportunity cost, well over £50,000 designing a byzantine system. It was technically brilliant. It was also practically useless.
We launched it internally to a handful of account managers. The feedback was brutal. It was too slow. The data was interesting but not actionable. It didn’t solve the immediate, messy problems they were facing every day.
We had built a precision instrument for a job that required a hammer. A simpler, dumber, but faster version would have been infinitely more valuable. We’d spent a fortune on technical perfection when a scrappy spreadsheet macro, delivered in a week, would have found a more welcome home. That mistake shaped my entire philosophy on product: value is a function of timing and utility, not complexity.
History is littered with technically superior products that failed. Betamax was better than VHS. The NeXT Computer was light years ahead of its time. The list is long and painful.
A more recent and potent UK example is Blippar. Remember them? Blippar created genuinely magical augmented reality technology. You could point your phone at a logo, a product, or a poster, and it would spring to life. Technically, it was phenomenal. The company raised over $130 million, a huge sum for a UK startup.
